DeWitt Public Schools Calendar 2026-2027

DeWitt Public Schools uses a grade-center structure that moves nearly every child through the same sequence of buildings. Schavey Road Elementary serves young fives, kindergarten, and grade 1; Scott Elementary serves grades 2–3; Herbison Woods serves grades 4–5; DeWitt Middle School serves grades 6–8; and DeWitt High School serves grades 9–12. Preschool programs begin the progression before students enter the K–12 system.

This design creates exceptionally strong cohort continuity. Instead of remaining divided among several neighborhood elementary feeder patterns, students come together from the beginning and advance as one districtwide group. Each building can focus its staff, schedule, facilities, and instructional practices on a narrow developmental span. Families also know in advance exactly where the next transition will occur.

The middle and high schools provide the widening range of electives, arts, athletics, advanced courses, clubs, and college or career planning expected in a growing suburban district. Because the elementary grades are already centralized by age, students arrive at secondary school with a shared district identity already in place.

DeWitt’s structure is one of its most important educational features. It trades the long-term attachment of a K–5 neighborhood school for highly specialized grade centers and consistent districtwide movement. Families experience more building changes in the elementary years, but fewer uncertainties about feeder patterns or program access.
