Byron Center Public Schools Calendar 2026-2027

Four DK–4 elementary schools converge at Nickels Intermediate School, making fifth grade the point when Byron Center becomes one districtwide student community. Nickels serves grades 5–6, West Middle School serves grades 7–8, and Byron Center High School serves grades 9–12. The sequence is linear, but each step is built for a different level of independence.

Nickels explicitly treats its two years as a bridge from elementary to secondary school. Teachers focus on the rigor, responsibility, and self-management students will need later, while exploratory classes introduce art, STEM, physical education, and music. By the time students reach West Middle, they have already spent two years learning how to navigate a broader schedule with classmates from all four elementary schools.

At the high-school level, the district’s boundaries become more permeable. Students can use dual enrollment through Grand Rapids Community College, attend programs at the Kent Career Tech Center, or earn credit through work-based learning. These options may place part of a student’s day at a college, technical center, or workplace while Byron Center High remains the home school. The district’s defining pattern is thus a carefully staged internal progression followed by an outward-facing high-school plan.
